Alexandria, VA — Hopkins House today announced that the federal government fiscal year 2026 funding bill approved by the U.S. House of Representatives and signed into law by the President includes $2.5 million in federal funding to support construction of a new Hopkins House location in the Samuel Madden Homes community in Old Town, Alexandria.
The funding was secured through the leadership and sustained advocacy of U.S. Senators Mark Warner and Tim Kaine, who successfully championed inclusion of this investment for Hopkins House in the Transportation, Housing and Urban Development (THUD) appropriations bill.
Senators Warner and Kaine have a long-standing relationship with Hopkins House and its mission. Both leaders visited Hopkins House while serving as Governors of the Commonwealth of Virginia, and they have continued to visit and engage with the organization after being elected to Congress, maintaining a deep understanding of the critical role high-quality early childhood education and workforce development play in strengthening families and communities.

Hopkins House is partnering with the Alexandria Redevelopment and Housing Authority (ARHA) and its developer partners to replace existing housing at Samuel Madden Homes with a new mixed-use community featuring affordable and workforce housing.
Founded in 1939, Hopkins House has a long history of partnering with elected officials to meet the evolving needs of children and families. The new Samuel Madden Homes location marks a major milestone in expanding access to safe, high-quality early childhood education and workforce development services in Alexandria.
This redeveloped community, scheduled for completion in late 2028, will include approximately 13,000 square feet of space in the South Building dedicated that will host several Hopkins House programs. This federal funding will cover the bulk of the estimated $3.1 million buildout cost to house:
- A state-of-the-art preschool
- An innovative workforce development and teen college prep program
- A before- and after-school care program for elementary school students
- Community meeting space
- Administrative offices
“This new location will enable Hopkins House to significantly expand our services in Alexandria,” Hopkins added. “From this new location, we anticipate serving at least 300 children, youth, and families yearly and employing 25 to 30 education and support professionals.”
With the federal commitment now secured, Hopkins House plans to launch a capital campaign later this year to raise the remaining $600,000 needed to fully fund the expansion project.
