Program to Supervise At-Home Kindergartners While Parents At Work
August 18, 2020 11:53 AM
The Hopkins House Trustees approved a new program to provide daytime supervision of school-age children while their parents are at work. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, public schools in the area have announced that they will not hold in-person classes this coming school year. As such, working parents are scrambling to find a way to both work and supervise their young children.
The new Hopkins House program, known as "Remote Learning Environment", or RLE, begins on September 8 when the public schools open virtually for the fall. It combines the resources of local public schools, community groups, and Hopkins House to offer 8 hours of supervised daily study and activities for children, in a comfortable, COVID-19 safe space at designated Hopkins House locations.
Academic content will be provided virtually by public school kindergarten teachers. Hopkins House will employ staff to supervise the children, take attendance, ensure COVID-19 mitigation protocols, provide meals, and organize recreational and other activities during the day. And, community groups will organize volunteers to tutor and help with homework.
This will allow parents to work comfortably (either at home or their workplace), knowing that their young children are in a safe place continuing their learning and social development.
In order to pay for this program, tuition will be charged, but at a rate substantially below that charged for full-time preschool. Government childcare subsidies will be available to help families in need pay the tuition for this new program.
Due to COVID-19 social distancing rules, admission to the RLE is extremely limited. Initial enrollment priority will be given to recent Hopkins House Preschool Academy graduates. However, Hopkins House officials are in discussion with local faith institutions and organizations to secure additional spaces should the demand exceed initial estimates.
