Alexandria, VA — In celebration of Earth Day, the young scholars at Hopkins House’s Helen Day Preschool Academy in Alexandria, Virginia, got their hands dirty in the best way possible: planting flowers and greenery as part of a hands-on environmental learning experience.
Observed annually on April 22, Earth Day is a global event dedicated to raising awareness about environmental protection and encouraging individuals and communities to take action to care for the planet.
The Hopkins House Preschool Academy Young Scholars enthusiastically participated in planting a variety of plants and flowers, gaining early exposure to environmental stewardship while engaging in a fun, sensory-rich activity. The project was made possible through the generous support of parents at the Academy who donated the plants and flowers, and through the leadership of Academy parent Chelsea Barkema.
“This type of hands-on activity supports multiple early learning developmental domains, including cognitive development, fine and gross motor skills, social-emotional growth, and early science exploration,” said Academy Principal Dr. Justin Thomas. “By engaging directly with nature, our Preschool Academy Young Scholars are not only learning how plants grow, but also developing responsibility, teamwork, and curiosity about the world around them.”
The Earth Day planting initiative will continue beyond this initial activity. The young scholars in the Academy’s Junior K and K-Prep classes will help water and maintain the plants, reinforcing lessons in care, consistency, and environmental responsibility over time.
Through projects like this, the Hopkins House Preschool Academy continues to foster a love of learning while encouraging students to become thoughtful and engaged members of their community — and good stewards of the planet.
