Hopkins House, NAACP, and other community partners are hosting a virtual community celebration at 7:30 pm on Thursday, October 29. The event will celebrate the Alexandria School Board decision to change the name of the City's only public high school and offer an opportunity for healing after years of effort and a contentious summer battle.

The celebration will include an opportunity to recommend a new name for the high school and donate to the Scholarship Fund of Alexandria.

T.C. Williams High School is named in memory of a proud and committed bigot who, as superintendent of Alexandria City Public Schools for three decades, did everything in his power to ensure that Alexandria’s public schools were kept segregated by race, and that the education of our children remained separate and unequal. Generations of brave voices of all races and hues came together to insist that the Alexandria School Board remove the racist’s name. Finally, we are rejoicing: The change is coming!
