Over $50,000 Raised for Scholarship Fund

February 17, 2014 01:57 PM
Despite major snow fall and blistering cold in the DC metropolitan area, over 80 guests turned out for Hopkins House's 22nd annual Heart of the Community Awards Luncheon at The Carlyle Club in Alexandria.

In addition to honoring Dominion Virginia Power and local businessman Scott C. Plein, the luncheon raised more than $50,000 to help the children of low-resourced parents attend the Hopkins House Preschool Academy.

Despite major snow fall and hazardous roads, the Boys & Girls Choir of Harlem Alumni Ensemble traveled from New York City to entertain the guests.  ABC7/WJLA-TV news anchor Leon Harris, originally scheduled to host the event, was called back to the news desk to cover the aftermath of the snow storm.

BB&T Bank underwrote the cost of the luncheon.

Through this annual luncheon and other events during the year, Hopkins House raises and grants over $200,000 in scholarships and tuition assistance to help children of low-resourced families attend its three preschool academies.
