Raising Critical Preschool Academy Scholarship Support

ALEXANDRIA, VA — Hopkins House will host this year’s Earl F. Lloyd Memorial Charity Golf Tournament on Friday, September 18, at Pohick Bay Golf Course in Lorton, Virginia. Limited to 72 golfers, Early Bird Registration is now open, and General Registration opens on July 20.
Honoring the Memory of “Big Cat”
This annual tournament honors the memory of Hopkins House alumnus Earl Francis Lloyd — known affectionately as “Big Cat” — and raises critical scholarship support for the Hopkins House Preschool Scholarship Fund while continuing a tradition of community engagement and educational opportunity that reflects Lloyd’s lifelong commitment to youth, education, and service.
This year’s tournament seeks to raise at least $17,000 for the Preschool Scholarship Fund. Sponsorship opportunities are available for local businesses, civic organizations, and community partners interested in providing their employees with a day of fun while supporting local children and working families.
Preschool Increasingly Unaffordable for Many Families
Driven by rising inflation and payroll expenses, preschool tuition, which now exceeds the annual cost of community college in Virginia, is increasingly unaffordable for many working families in the region. Through the generosity of donors to the Preschool Scholarship Fund, Hopkins House seeks to help by providing need-based tuition assistance to low-resourced working families seeking access for their children to high-quality early care and education.
“This golf tournament is critically important because it helps ensure that hardworking families have access to high-quality, safe childcare for their children,” said Scholarships & Recognitions Committee Chair, Robert Hicks, the Hopkins House Trustee committee that organizes this annual event. “For many families, the cost of childcare is overwhelming, exceeding $20,000 annually per child. Through this tournament we’re able to help ensure that all children, regardless of family circumstance, continue to have access to a safe, nurturing, high-quality early learning environment like the Hopkins House Preschool Academy.”
Annually, Hopkins House disburses over $85,000 in financial aid to families in need. For many families, this support makes the difference between placing their children in lower quality childcare settings or in nationally accredited, high-quality childcare at the Hopkins House Preschool Academy.
