ALEXANDRIA, VA — Hopkins House Trustees proudly celebrated the dedication, talent, and impact of the organization’s educators, staff, and administrators during their Annual Staff Appreciation & Awards Luncheon, held last month at the Archer Hotel in Old Town Alexandria. The event honored team members for their professional achievements, academic milestones, and unwavering commitment to the Hopkins House mission in service to the community’s children, youth, and families.
During the celebration, Trustees awarded Legacy Club cash bonuses to staff members with more than two years of service. Special recognition was given to Stephanie Turner-Menson, Director of the Early Childhood Learning Institute, who has dedicated an outstanding 18 years to the organization. Notably, more than half of all Hopkins House staff have served for over three years — reflecting exceptional staff longevity and organizational commitment.
Several team members were recognized with major awards:
Red Carpet Award – Doris Otu, Lead Teacher, James L. & Juliette McNeil Preschool Academy located in Fairfax County, for “helping make others feel welcome, contributing to an inclusive environment, and encouraging expression of differences.”
Excellence in Education Award – Idiatou Camara, Associate Teacher, McNeil Preschool Academy, for “delivering exceptional environments that foster growth and learning.”
Above and Beyond Award – Derrick Baker, Assistant Teacher, Helen Day Preschool Academy located in the City of Alexandria, for his “eagerness to learn and positive attitude.”
Community Outreach Award – Agnes Agyemang, Lead Teacher, McNeil Preschool Academy, for “representing Hopkins House at outreach events and supporting fundraising efforts.”
Hero Award – Anastasiia Dotsenko, Instructional Assistant, Helen Day Preschool Academy, for “best demonstrating exceptional family support.”
President’s Award – Presented by President J. Glenn Hopkins to Dr. Justin Thomas, Principal of Helen Day Preschool Academy, for “exemplifying the highest standards of professionalism.”
Chairman’s Award – In a historic moment, Board Chair James L. Banks, Jr. broke long-standing tradition by honoring a non-manager: Cecilia Maniego, Master Teacher, Helen Day Preschool Academy, for “exemplary work performance, team spirit, and volunteer service.”
All recognitions included significant cash bonuses, and every staff member received a $150 grocery gift card donated by the Trustees “to help offset the rising cost of basic needs.”
“This luncheon is our opportunity to say thank you,” Board Chair Banks shared. “Our educators and staff are the heart of Hopkins House. Their dedication ensures our Young Scholars learn, grow, and thrive every day.”
The annual luncheon remains a cherished Hopkins House tradition — honoring excellence, celebrating service, and acknowledging the individuals who make the organization’s mission possible year after year.
