Alexandria, VA – Hopkins House announced today that its first annual Earl F. Lloyd Memorial Charity Golf Tournament, held on September 19, 2025, at Pohick Bay Golf Course in Lorton, Virginia, raised nearly $14,000 in support of the organization’s Preschool Scholarship Fund. The sold-out event drew close to 60 golfers from across the region.
Proceeds from the tournament will provide scholarships for financially low-resourced families, helping them afford safe, high-quality preschool education for their children. With rising preschool tuition and recent federal job losses placing added pressure on working families, Hopkins House anticipates a significant increase in scholarship applications this preschool year.
The tournament honors Earl F. Lloyd, a Hopkins House alumnus and pioneering athlete who made history in 1950 as the first African American to play in an NBA game. Among the VIP guests in attendance were Lloyd’s son, Kevin Lloyd (Pictured here on the right, with host committee chair Bob Hicks (Center) and Hopkins House President J. Glenn Hopkins (left)); former NFL linebacker D’Qwell Jackson; and retired U.S. Navy Vice Admiral Derwood “D.C.” Curtis.
“This tournament not only celebrates the legacy of Earl F. Lloyd but also strengthens our ability to serve children and families who need us most,” said Robert “Bob” Hicks, Hopkins House Trustee and Chair of the Board’s Scholarships & Recognitions Committee, which hosted the event. “The generosity of our players, sponsors, and community ensures more children will have the foundation they need to succeed.”
Hopkins House, founded in 1939, is a nonprofit organization based in Alexandria and Fairfax County, Virginia. Through its two Preschool Academies and the Early Childhood Learning Institute, Hopkins House provides high-quality early education and workforce development programs that serve more than 400 children, youth, and adults annually.
