Preschool Academy
The Hopkins House Preschool Academy is a true “school.” Our focus, in addition to
offering a safe-haven for the children,
is educating and preparing them for exceptional achievement in kindergarten and beyond.
Our Values:
At the Hopkins House Preschool Academy we value families and the
central role they play as first teachers of their children; we value
age-appropriate teaching methods founded on best practices and
implemented by well-educated and trained educators; and, we value
activities in the classroom that allow children to explore,
experiment, imitate, ask questions and be questioned.

Our Education Philosophy:
We believe that the most effective way for children to learn is through
hands-on activity, in
a
safe, supportive and nurturing environment; and, that the lessons
learned by the children are made enduring through supportive
relationships between the children, their families and the preschool
staff.
•
We seek to
encourage the children to explore their natural sense of wonder;
discover their creative spirit; learn problem-solving skills;
develop self-control and consideration of others; increase
coordination, balance, and body image; and realize that learning is
fun.
•
We believe that
children learn through play; and that they build knowledge by touching,
tasting, smelling, watching, listening, and doing.
Our
Curriculum: The Hopkins House Preschool Academy uses the
"Creative Curriculum". Through this child-centered curriculum
we seek to encourage social competence, making considered choices,
self-reliance and independence; and, we seek
to broaden their skills through music and movement, science and
environmental discovery, family and culture, and language and
numbers.
Our
Faculty: All Hopkins House Preschool Academy classes are staffed
by a Teacher, Assistant Teacher, and Education Aide. Teachers
and Assistant Teachers are required to have a college degree or
matriculating toward a college degree. All Academy
educators, including Aides, are required to enroll annually in at
least 16 clock-hours of continuing education. Click here for

Elward J.
Alexander Memorial Gift Project
With the hope that knowledge can save lives, Hopkins House seeks to increase awareness about the pain and suffering violence inflicts on children and families through a program established in memory of a 19 year old college student killed in 1999. The Elward J. Alexander Memorial Gift Fund at Hopkins House provides a cash “gift” for the education of a child or teenager whose family has been victim to violent crime. This permanent fund enables Hopkins House to reach out to these young people with a message of hope and caring. In 2005, Elward's brother, the first recipient of the Memorial Gift, was killed. In sympathy to the family, no
recipient was selected that year.
