Mirant is a competitive energy company that produces and sells electricity in the United States.  The company has awarded over $250,000 in scholarships to high school graduates in the City of Alexandria and, in partnership with the National Park Service and local community groups, hosts cleanup events along the Potomac River. 

 

JOAN HUFFER & ROB DUGGER

2010 Helen Miller Community Heart Award Recipient

Together, Joan Huffer and Rob Dugger’s professional and personal commitments to early childhood education have had major local and national impact.  Ms. Huffer worked in the U.S. Senate for 27 years  and her husband Rob is a founder of the Partnership for America’s Economic Success and chairman of its Invest in Kids Working Group.

Ms. Simpson is an Emmy Award winning journalist who anchors ABC7/WJLA TV’s 5 pm newscast on weeknights.  A graduate of Howard University, Ms. Simpson graduated magna cum laude from the John H. Johnson School of Communications where she majored in Broadcast Journalism and minored in Spanish.

MARIAN WRIGHT EDELMAN

Founder & President, Children’s Defense Fund

Mrs. Edelman is a nationally known advocate for children and families. A graduate of Spelman and Yale Law School, Ms. Edelman is the founder of the Children’s Defense Fund, author of eight books, and a recipient of the Albert Sweitzer Humanitarian Award  and the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
